Big Summerlin Events Move To Downtown Summerlin®

The master-planned community Summerlin® is hosting two of its largest community events this month: The Summerlin Half Marathon and Tour de Summerlin. Both annual events are open to the public and this year feature exciting new courses that start and end in Downtown Summerlin.

“Summerlin is pleased to welcome participants from across the valley to enjoy  these events showcasing the community’s most popular amenities, including scenic trails, parks and streetscapes, as well as Downtown Summerlin, the region’s new fashion, dining, and entertainment destination,” said Danielle Bisterfeldt, director of marketing for Summerlin.

The starter pistol will sound at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning in Downtown Summerlin to signal the start of the 5th annual Summerlin® Half Marathon, in partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). With nearly 1,000 runners and walkers registered to complete this year’s new 13.1-mile course, the record-breaking number of participants includes members of the LLS Team in Training running group, made up of blood cancer survivors and their supporters. Athletes of all abilities can participate in this chip-timed run/walk half- marathon that includes a scenic tour of several Summerlin villages. All participants receive race shirts and medals and the top male and female finishers in varying age groups receive recognition.  Pending availability, onsite race registration Sunday morning is $100.

Next Saturday, April 18, hundreds of cyclists will converge on Downtown Summerlin for the 14th annual Tour de Summerlin non-competitive cycling event. In addition to the 40- and 60-mile routes, the 2015 event features an 80-mile ride through and around the master-planned community. Starting at 7 a.m., cyclists will enjoy Summerlin’s dedicated bike routes as well as wide, open desert roads. This event benefits Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada and includes the adult team Riders for Candlelighters Kids. Also new this year is Candlelighter’s first kids cycling team with cyclists ages 11 to 16 years old.  Registration is $65 and out-of-town participants can rent bikes from McGhies Ski, Bike & Board.

With Downtown Summerlin as the main event backdrop this year, lululemon athletica will host warm-up events for the runners and cyclists while other vendors including California Pizza Kitchen, CRAVE, Nekter Juice Bar and Vision by Amel will sponsor special menu offers, tastings and provide drinks before and during the events. 

“It was a natural decision for us to move these two events to Downtown Summerlin, where excitement still brims for what is now the heart of the master-planned community,” said Vicki Rousseau, director of marketing for the 106-acre Downtown Summerlin.  “These annual events boast large followings, and with the new location, we are confident even more participants will join the fun.”
