CCSD To Expand International Baccalaureate Program To Schools In And Near Summerlin
A unique and exceptional educational opportunity for Summerlin students is now available via Clark County School District’s expansion of its highly acclaimed International Baccalaureate (IB) program at schools in and near Summerlin.
Beginning in the 2015-16 school year, nearby Piggott Elementary School and Walter Johnson Middle School will become IB magnet schools, and Summerlin’s Palo Verde High School will begin offering IB programs. That means Summerlin students who are accepted into the IB program at one of these schools at the elementary or middle school level will have a clear path to complete their IB education in Summerlin.
It is a requirement of the IB program that students engage in a foreign language. Piggott Elementary School will offer Spanish; Walter Johnson will offer Japanese and Spanish; and students attending Palo Verde High School will have the opportunity to study multiple foreign languages.
Additionally, Walter Johnson is part of CCSD’s E3 Project that features a strong technology integration throughout the curriculum and provides every student with a netbook computer for school and home use.
The application is now open through February 3, 2015 at 3 p.m. Interested parents and students are encouraged to visit www.magnet.ccsd.net for additional information. There are no criteria for students wanting to attend an elementary magnet program. Currently, criteria are being revised for middle and high school with the most up to date information on the website. Applying to a Magnet School is as easy as submitting either an online application or completing a paper application and submitting it to your first choice school by the deadline.
The IB program focuses on inquiry-based learning which includes a variety of teaching methods that aim to build upon students’ individual knowledge and interests while exposing them to a hands-on, worldly education. Students take what they have learned and engage in real-world application in the form of capstone-level projects.
The Primary Years Program (PYP) prepares students to become lifelong learners. The Middle Years Program (MYP) encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. And in high school, IB offers a challenging and rigorous Diploma Program (DP) that culminates in a certificate recognized by leading universities. Students take a challenging liberal arts course of study and pass examinations in six academic subjects. DP students have the potential to complete a semester of college while also engaging in meaningful community service projects.
