Summerlin® Schools Part Of Community's Top Amenities
Education has long played an important role in shaping the master-planned community of Summerlin®, which is today home to 22 schools encompassing a strong collection of the valley’s best private schools and many top-ranked public schools of the Clark County School District (CCSD). According to Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corporation, developer of Summerlin, several recent developments are further enhancing the community’s impressive educational offerings with the announcement of a new public elementary school and the addition of new programs at Palo Verde High School and West Career and Technical Academy.
As a result of zoning changes and a new recently passed Nevada Legislature bill (SB 207), CCSD intends to commence construction on a new public elementary school in The Paseos village later this year, bringing the number of public schools in the community to 13. The district plans to open this new school to students living in The Paseos in time for the 2017-2018 school year. Additionally, students living in The Paseos will attend Staton Elementary or Sig Rogich Middle school in The Arbors village beginning with the 2015-16 school year, ensuring Summerlin students have the opportunity to attend school near their homes.
Palo Verde High School will begin offering International Baccalaureate (IB) programs for the 2015-16 school year. This highly acclaimed program focuses on inquiry-based learning that embodies a hands-on, worldly education that includes a demanding and rewarding curriculum, foreign language study and a real- world capstone project. For more information on IB programs, visit www.ibo.org.
West Career and Technical Academy (WCTA), a magnet high school operated by CCSD to which students may apply, provides a specialized and advanced college and career preparatory education. Students select from one of nine program areas: Veterinary and Medical Sciences, Biotechnology, Nursing, Sports Medicine, Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Business Management, Digital Media, and Information Technology. West Tech is the first Google pilot school in the district.
“Summerlin, now marking its 25th year, has a long history of valuing education, beginning with the very first facility in the community,” said Warden. “In the late 1980s, a few years before the first residents moved into their homes, the Meadows School opened. Summerlin visionaries understood the important role good schools have in building a sense of community. And the executive team of The Howard Hughes Corporation continues to work closely with both public and private school operators to ensure Summerlin families have access to a growing number of quality educational options.”
Other top-performing private schools in Summerlin include The Adelson Educational Campus, which has produced consecutive years with 100-percent college graduation and college placement rates since it opened in 2009; The Alexander Dawson School, a non-sectarian, coeducational school offering a rigorous liberal arts program for children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, as well as a year round college preparatory program; and Bishop Gorman High School, a Catholic college preparatory academy that boasts a 100 percent graduation rate and hosts a strong athletic program that’s earned more than 97 state championships in the school’s 61-year history including during the 2014 season in which the varsity football team earned another Division 1 NIAA State Football Championship and was ranked number one in the nation.
