Summerlin® Welcomes Charter School To Community​


The master-planned community Summerlin®, developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation (HHC)®  is adding to its robust list of 23 public and private schools with the opening of Doral Academy Red Rock, a public charter school set to open fall 2016. Located near the southwest corner of Sky Vista Drive and Alta Drive, near West Charleston Boulevard with Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area as its backdrop, the school will offer kindergarten through ninth grade. It will eventually expand to include tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades as its student population matriculates.


According to Peggy Chandler, senior vice president, Summerlin, the opening of this new Summerlin charter school is the result of strategic planning by HHC to create additional classroom space and accommodate the community’s growing population.  “From the community’s inception, The Howard Hughes Corporation has always set aside land for schools in Summerlin,” said Chandler. “As our local school district has been challenged to keep up with growth, we began to search for alternatives to help satisfy the needs of our community’s increasing student population. Doral Academy’s reputation and proven track record for success make this charter program the right fit for Summerlin.”

The Doral Academy charter schools are state-sponsored and overseen by the State Public Charter School Authority. The school is free to attend but students are accepted through a lottery system.    Doral Academy has three other campuses throughout the valley. The Summerlin campus becomes Doral’s fourth campus in Southern Nevada and is expected to accommodate 2,400 students at full capacity.

“Doral Academy of Nevada is a unique arts integration school which incorporates content and skills from the arts - dance, music, theater, media and visual arts  - with other academic concepts/skills and content area standards,” said Bridge Bilbray-Phillips, Doral’s executive director and founding principal.  “The staff of Doral Academy of Nevada is very excited to open our first K-12 school in Summerlin. This new school is Doral’s first high school and fourth elementary/middle school. The high school will continue with the arts integration focus and offer two tracks:  humanities and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).”

“As Southern Nevada has recovered from the recession, our population is once again in a growth mode,” said Tom Warden, senior vice president, Summerlin. “Given the importance of schools to community, we actively sought quality educational partners like Doral Academy and are excited they are coming to Summerlin.  Additionally, we continue to work diligently with the Clark County School District to open additional public schools on land that has long been set aside for this purpose in our community.”

In fact, two Clark County School District public elementary schools are slated for construction in Summerlin.  The first is located in The Paseos village and the second is sited for The Cliffs, Summerlin’s southernmost village, and both are slated to open for the 2017-18 school year.
